Just In: NLC Threatens Telecom Shutdown Over ‘Exploitative’ Tariff Increase

Despite prior agreements with the Federal Government and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), telecom operators went ahead with the tariff hike. In response, the NLC has issued a deadline of February 29, 2025, for the rollback, warning of severe consequences if ignored.

In a communique signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emma Ugboaja, the Congress directed workers and the general public to take the following steps:

• Daily Boycott: Avoid using MTN, AIRTEL, and GLO services from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, beginning Thursday, February 13, 2025, and continuing until month’s end.
• Suspend Data Purchases: Refrain from buying data from the affected telecom providers.
• Public Mobilization: NLC state councils and affiliate unions will mobilize and educate citizens on the tariff issue.

The NLC accused telecom companies of betraying public trust by implementing the hike before completing the agreed review process. It also criticized the Federal Government for failing to shield citizens from corporate exploitation.

The Congress also reviewed ongoing Tax Reform Bills, cautioning against policies that could further strain Nigerian workers. While recognizing the need for fiscal reforms, the NLC pledged to advocate for tax policies that are fair and beneficial to workers.

Should the telecom companies fail to reverse the hike by February 29, the NLC will begin a nationwide shutdown of telecom services on March 1, 2025. The Congress has called on civil society groups and all Nigerians to unite in opposing these exploitative economic measures.
