Kano Emirate: NNPP Commends Governor Yusuf For Restoring Cultural-Heritage (Details)
The Lagos State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on Friday commended Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State for his efforts to preserve the ancient state’s cultural heritage.
In a statement issued in Lagos, the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Richard Benson, praised the re-enthronement of former CBN governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano. Benson highlighted that this move was significant in maintaining the sanctity of the tradition.
Benson also acknowledged the role of Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State and the NNPP’s 2023 Presidential Candidate, in ensuring the preservation of these traditions. He stated, “We, the New Nigeria People’s Party, Lagos State chapter, at this moment commend the effort of the amiable Governor of Kano Abba Yusuf, and our indefatigable National Leader Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and the entire House of Assembly of Kano in ensuring that the cultural heritage of the people is preserved based on truth.”
He emphasized the importance of preserving Kano’s cultural heritage and expressed delight at the efforts to restore the city’s lost glory. Benson criticized politicians who use cultural traditions for political gain and urged all NNPP leaders in Kano to collaborate to make the state a model for others.
On May 23, Governor Yusuf signed the amended Kano State Emirates Council bill into law. The bill, passed by the Kano State House of Assembly, dissolved the previously established Emirate Council and sacked the five Emirs appointed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. Yusuf also reinstated Sanusi, the former Emir of Kano who was deposed in 2020.
The previous Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019, signed by Ganduje, had created five Emirates: Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye. Sanusi was dethroned in 2020 for alleged insubordination and replaced by Aminu Ado Bayero.
