Mike Ozekhome: Nigeria’s Fragmented Identity – Where Are Our National Unions?
Prominent Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), has voiced his concerns about the lack of national unity in Nigeria, highlighting the growing presence of town unions as a reflection of the country’s fragmented identity.
In a recent interview on Channels Television, Ozekhome expressed deep concern over the issue of ethnic marginalization in Nigeria. He referenced the work of renowned sociologist Professor Onigu Otite, who has studied the complexities of Nigeria’s ethnic diversity. Ozekhome criticized a controversial remark made by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who referred to the Igbo people as a “dot in the circle,” questioning the broader implications of such statements for Nigeria’s smaller ethnic groups.
Ozekhome pointed out that while town unions are thriving across the country, a sense of collective national identity remains absent. “If you go around on Sunday, you’ll see different town unions. But where will you see a Nigerian union holding a meeting?” he asked, emphasizing the disjointed nature of the country’s identity.
Drawing comparisons with the United States, Ozekhome noted that despite America’s diverse backgrounds, its citizens share a strong sense of national pride. “They have what you call faith in their country,” he remarked, lamenting the lack of similar unity in Nigeria.
He urged that each of Nigeria’s 374 ethnic groups be given the respect and recognition they deserve within the nation’s fabric. “Each of these groups must have a place and be respected where they come from,” Ozekhome stressed.
The call for a united Nigeria, where ethnic diversity is celebrated rather than marginalized, underscores the need for a stronger, more inclusive national identity.
