The Faculty of Engineering at Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt, included a question regarding the controversies surrounding the passing of Mohbad, a former artist under Naira Marley’s record label, in their second semester examinations.

In an effort to link theoretical knowledge with real-world scenarios in contractual agreements between employers and employees, the RSU Engineering Faculty opted to employ this contentious case study to assess students’ comprehension of the regulatory framework governing employer-employee relationships.

In recent times, no Nigerian entertainer’s passing has incited as much uproar, prompting protests across several cities by thousands of youths demanding justice for the deceased, as was the case with Mobad.

Mobad gained more prominence posthumously than when he was alive, due to the circumstances surrounding his demise.

Naira Marley, who was technically his employer, has been detained in police custody as per a court order, while the police continue their inquiries into the events leading up to the demise of the 27-year-old entertainer.

The examiners tasked students with discussing the concept of notice within an employment relationship, as well as delving into who possesses the authority to terminate an employment contract based on their understanding of the regulatory framework.

The question reads: “Mohbad was signed/ employed by Marlians Record in Nigeria, whose CEO is Naira Marley. Though the investigation is still ongoing, reports making the rounds on the internet have it that all attempts by Mohbad (the signee) to terminate the contract between himself and Marlians Record was resisted.

“With your knowledge of the regulatory framework of employer/employee relationship, discuss the concept of notice in an employment relationship. Who can terminate the contract of employment?”
