on Monday, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, highlighted the administration’s focused efforts to address the persistent challenges in the agricultural sector.

Abdullahi emphasized the urgency of tackling food insecurity, a priority that has been elevated under President Tinubu’s leadership. He recalled that last year, the President declared a state of emergency on food security due to the nation’s poor performance in this area.

The Minister noted that addressing food security is essential not only for providing adequate nutrition for Nigerians but also for spurring economic growth, reducing poverty, and promoting gender equality. He stated that food security is now central to Nigeria’s economic recovery and will play a pivotal role in the country’s sustainable development.

One of the most significant challenges facing Nigerian agriculture is outdated farming tools. To remedy this, the government is rolling out a series of agricultural mechanisation programs designed to revolutionize the industry. Abdullahi pointed out that many farmers still rely on rudimentary equipment, hindering their productivity. As a solution, the government is introducing innovative mechanisation projects.

A key initiative is the Greener Imperative Project, set to launch in January 2025. This program, ordered by President Tinubu, aims to modernise the country’s farming machinery and processes, significantly improving efficiency and food production.

The Greener Imperative Project follows earlier mechanisation programs like the Greener Up Initiative and partnerships with Belarus and Brazil, focusing on modernising agricultural practices and reducing the sector’s dependence on traditional methods.

Abdullahi expressed confidence that these projects will mark a new era in Nigerian agriculture, enhancing food security and improving the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians.
