Nigerian-Households Struggle As Food Prices Skyrocket By Over 130% (Details)
Nigerian households are facing unprecedented economic challenges as the prices of essential food items experience a staggering surge, with staple foods such as rice, garri, beans, and yam witnessing a sharp increase of over 130 per cent compared to the previous year. According to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), this alarming rise in food costs paints a grim picture of the country’s economic landscape….CONTINUE READING
The NBS’s selected food prices watch for April 2024 reveals a disturbing trend of soaring food prices, exacerbating the financial strain on already vulnerable households. In April 2024, the price of a one-kilogram bag of rice skyrocketed by a staggering 155.93 per cent, reaching ₦1,399.34 from ₦546.76 recorded in April 2023. Similarly, the average price of 1kg of garri surged by 134.98 per cent year-on-year to ₦851.81. Additionally, the price of 1kg of yam tuber witnessed a sharp increase of 154.19 per cent year-on-year, soaring to ₦1,130.37.
These significant spikes in food prices occur against a backdrop of rising general and food inflation rates, which stood at 33.69 percent and 40.53 percent, respectively, in April. The NBS report attributes the sharp rise in food prices to a combination of factors, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation of the naira, policies enacted under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Financial analysts and economists are voicing concerns regarding the efficacy of the government’s current monetary policies in mitigating inflationary pressures. With household budgets strained by exorbitant food prices, there are growing calls for urgent interventions to address the root causes of the economic downturn and alleviate the burden on Nigerian families.
As the nation grapples with the profound impact of escalating food costs on its populace, policymakers face mounting pressure to implement effective measures to stabilize the economy and safeguard the welfare of its citizens. The resilience and adaptability of Nigerian households in the face of these daunting economic challenges remain paramount as the country navigates through uncertain times.
