This operation, named ‘Operation Desert Sanity III,’ targeted multiple terrorist hideouts within the forest, including Shababul Umma, Garin Panel Beater, and Lagara Anguwan Gwaigwai, on May 13, 2024.

The offensive is part of the ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist strongholds in the region, confirmed by Counter Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst, Zagazola Makama. Tahir Baga, a close ally of Boko Haram’s leader Abubakar Shekau, played a significant role in the group’s operations, particularly in the transition from Maiduguri to the Sambisa Forest. His demise, along with several associates, deals a severe blow to the group.

Tahir Baga, also a revered Imam among the sect, was instrumental in preventing fighters and families from surrendering to Nigerian forces and was notorious for indoctrinating underage girls into carrying out suicide bombings. The operation not only resulted in the liberation of 14 hostages, including women and children, but also in the seizure of a substantial cache of weapons and materials from the terrorist enclaves.

The recovered items included bomb-making materials, various ammunition types, RPGs, AK-47 rifles, mobile phones, bicycles, and advanced communication devices like a Starlink WiFi system and solar inverter batteries. The elimination of Tahir Baga signifies a significant setback for Boko Haram, potentially disrupting their operations and reducing their capacity to carry out further attacks in the region.

The Nigerian military remains committed to its offensive against terrorist groups in the North East, aiming to ensure peace and security in the area.
