NNPC GMD Quietly Awarded Control Of Nigeria’s Pipelines To Northern Oil ‘Cabal’ Ignoring Igbos?
For years, Nigeria has grappled with the problem of pipeline vandalism and petroleum product theft, resulting in the inactivity of many depots owned by the state energy company NNPC. On October 10, 2023, NNPC announced the four consortia selected to fund the rehabilitation of pipelines.
A consortium is a collective of organizations, companies, or individuals that collaborate on a project that may be too extensive or intricate for any one member to undertake alone.
NNPC stated that the repairs aim to enhance pipeline functionality, ensuring the efficient transportation of crude oil to refineries and the nationwide distribution of petroleum products.
However, a Facebook post circulating in Nigeria alleges that NNPC’s Chief, Mele Kyari, has covertly awarded the pipeline rehabilitation contract to influential figures from the northern region. Kyari, appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who hails from the north, assumed the position in 2019.

But is it true?
In an official statement released on its official platform, X (formerly Twitter), the company clarified that it had openly advertised the contracts and chosen the four consortia based on “rigorous evaluation criteria and in line with industry norms.”
The statement emphasized that the ownership of these crucial national assets remains with NNPC Limited, and the organization is dedicated to guaranteeing their ongoing operation for the benefit of over 200 million Nigerians.
The statement also provides the names of the companies comprising the four consortia, highlighting that their exclusive role is to offer financial backing for the project. There is no transfer of control or ownership of the assets to these consortia.
