Northern Groups Condemn Calls for Military Takeover Amidst Rising National Tensions
Several groups from the Northern states have firmly dissociated themselves from the voices advocating for a military takeover of the Nigerian government. These groups are making it clear that they stand against any attempts to disrupt the country’s democratic processes.
Abbas Dattijo, Chairman of the National Unity Forum for Peace, criticized those calling for a change in the democratically elected government, emphasizing that such calls do not represent the sentiments of the Northern region. He reiterated that the nation’s democracy should not be undermined by any individual or group.
In other news, the Debt Management Office (DMO) has introduced two new Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) savings bonds, available for subscription at a rate of N1,000 per unit. The first bond, a two-year savings bond maturing on August 21, 2026, offers an interest rate of 17.373% per annum. The second bond, a three-year savings bond, is set to mature on August 21, 2027, with an interest rate of 18.373% per annum. These bonds provide an opportunity for Nigerians to invest in the government’s financial instruments with favorable returns.
Amid growing dissatisfaction, tensions between the federal and state governments have escalated due to disputes over the allocation and usage of a N570 billion fund from the World Bank. The rift has highlighted the disconnect between the promises of government funding and the actual improvements in the standard of living for ordinary Nigerians. President Bola Tinubu recently addressed the nation, acknowledging the increasing violence associated with the #Endbadgovernance protests, which began on August 1, and emphasized the need for better governance to bridge the gap between the government and the people.
In sports, the Borno State Government has fulfilled its promise of N35.2 million in gifts to the El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club following their impressive performance in the 2024 men’s President Federation Cup. In addition to this, the team also received a N50 million cash prize, further motivating the players and coaching staff to strive for even greater achievements in the future.
