Northern Youth Council Rejects Bill To Convert Lagos LCDAs Into LGAs

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has strongly opposed a proposed bill aimed at converting 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State into full-fledged Local Government Areas (LGAs).

In a statement released on Thursday in Kaduna, NYCN National President, Isah Abubakar, described the bill as “unjust” and a threat to the principles of equity and fairness that should guide the nation’s governance. Abubakar also called for a comprehensive and fair review of local governance structures across the country. He emphasized the need for northern governors to stand firm against the bill, stressing that it was important to safeguard northern interests in the process.

He explained, “We believe the creation of new LGAs should not solely benefit Lagos State at the expense of other states in the federation. If these 37 LCDAs are granted LGA status, it would set a dangerous precedent, leading to similar demands from LCDAs across the nation.”

The NYCN president urged governors, particularly those from northern Nigeria, to oppose the bill and advocate for equitable governance that addresses the needs of all Nigerians, not just those from specific regions.

Abubakar further stressed that any discussions regarding the creation of LGAs should involve a broad dialogue with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that decisions are made with consideration for the diverse needs of the entire country.

As the bill, which has already passed its second reading in the House of Representatives, continues to spark debate, the NYCN remains committed to promoting unity, fairness, and equity in governance. Abubakar concluded by calling on lawmakers to reassess the implications of the bill and prioritize the well-being of all Nigerians in their decision-making.

Reports indicate that while some lawmakers support the bill, others have raised concerns about its potential effects on the country’s governance framework. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government plans to conduct local government elections in 2025, which will include all 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs, although debates about the role and desirability of LCDAs continue.
