Over 340 Police Officers Retire After IGP’s Probe – What Happens Next Will Shock You

Over 340 officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have reportedly chosen to retire following a disciplinary committee review of their service.

The committee, which met between Monday and Tuesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, conducted the screening process with the support of the Force Management.

Although it remains unclear whether potential sanctions influenced the officers’ decisions, sources close to the committee confirmed their voluntary exit.

Many of the retiring officers had either exceeded the age of 60 or served for more than 35 years but had not formally proceeded with their retirement.

Among those reviewed was Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Benneth Igweh, who previously led Zone 7, alongside two Commissioners of Police and a senior police lawyer.

Reports indicate that AIG Igweh has officially handed over his responsibilities to his successor, Mohammed Gumel.

The committee primarily focused on officers who were due for retirement since 2020 but had remained in service due to various reasons, including conversion from rank-and-file to senior officers without completing mandatory training at the police academy.

A source familiar with the process revealed that over 340 officers submitted their retirements by Tuesday.

“Many of them are senior officers. Those who were supposed to leave last year have now retired. I am not sure if any penalties were imposed,” the source stated.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) had previously directed the immediate retirement of officers exceeding 35 years of service or reaching the age of 60.

In a statement issued on January 31, 2025, the PSC clarified that earlier retirement guidelines had been reviewed to ensure compliance with standard procedures.

The decision was subsequently conveyed to the Inspector-General of Police for implementation.

Despite concerns about the timing of these retirements, given IGP Egbetokun’s tenure extension by President Bola Tinubu, Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) affirmed that the President’s decision was legally justified.
