Ozekhome Foresees Potential Naira-Dollar Exchange Rate Of N4000 Despite Crackdown On BDC Operators
In a startling revelation, renowned Nigerian Lawyer and human rights activist, Mike Ozekhome, has issued a stark prediction regarding the future exchange rate between the Naira and the Dollar. Ozekhome warns that if the current trajectory of the Naira’s decline persists, the Dollar may skyrocket to an alarming rate of N4000 by the year’s end, sending shockwaves through the nation’s economic landscape…..READ ALSOExclusive Update: Black Market Dollar To Naira Exchange Rate Unveiled For February 28th, 2024
Recent market dynamics have seen a surge in demand for dollars, triggering a scarcity that has exerted immense pressure on the Naira. This precarious situation has prompted a crackdown on Bureau De Change (BDC) operators across major cities in Nigeria, in an attempt to mitigate the currency’s free fall.
In response to mounting concerns, Governor Olayemi Cardoso of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has pledged decisive action to tackle the monetary challenges gripping the nation. During a recent Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting announcement, Cardoso assured stakeholders of concerted efforts to inject liquidity into the forex market, with a notable disbursement of $400 million identified for this purpose, pushing reserves to $34 billion.
Despite these assurances, Ozekhome remains unconvinced, citing a lack of tangible interventions to stabilize the Naira’s value. During an interview on Channels Television Politics Today, Ozekhome expressed grave concerns, stating, “Before the end of this year, if we are not careful, the Naira may exchange for N4000 to the dollar because there is nothing in place.”
Drawing a dire comparison to Ghana’s past economic woes, Ozekhome highlights the urgent need for proactive measures to avert a similar fate. He underscores the pivotal role of BDCs in shaping Nigeria’s economic destiny, lamenting their marginalization and advocating for their meaningful inclusion in policy deliberations.
As the nation grapples with economic uncertainty, Ozekhome’s warning serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and strategic interventions to safeguard Nigeria’s financial stability and preserve the purchasing power of its citizens.
