Power Crisis Uncovered: FG Identifies Key Factors Behind National Grid Failures

The Federal Government has revealed that inadequate maintenance and outdated equipment are major contributors to the frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national power grid. This disclosure follows the latest grid failure, marking the 10th such incident in 2024 alone…CONTINUE READING…

Nafisatu Asabe Ali, Chairperson of the investigative committee tasked with probing the grid failures, presented the committee’s findings at the Ministry of Power headquarters in Abuja. She explained that excessive voltage, which exceeded the capacity of the grid’s equipment, was responsible for the major blackouts on October 14 and 19, 2024.

The committee’s inquiry found that lightning arrestors at the Jebba and Oshogbo transmission stations failed, and an explosion of a current transformer at Jebba Station contributed to these incidents. According to Ali, the high voltage in Jebba, which reached up to 400KV, surpassed the threshold for equipment durability, leading to widespread failure. Jebba’s equipment, commissioned in 1968, is also notably aged, with one reactor already out of service.

In addition to aging infrastructure, the committee highlighted several other challenges, including vandalism, irregular maintenance schedules, and insufficient staffing at power generation facilities.

Responding to the findings, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu stated that the ministry would seek additional funding from the 2024 Supplementary Budget and the 2025 Appropriation Bill to address the issue. He emphasized the government’s commitment to reforms that would stabilize the power grid and prevent further breakdowns.

The committee also proposed immediate actions to address these concerns, including equipment audits, improved maintenance of transmission infrastructure, and measures to enhance operational efficiency.
