Presidency: Tinubu Did Not Suggest Printing Naira To Salvage Economy
In response to recent claims, the Presidency has refuted allegations that President Bola Tinubu advised the Muhammadu Buhari administration to print N22.7 trillion. The controversy arose from remarks made by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Wale Edun, during a session with the Senate Committee on Finance…..READ ALSO Presidency Speaks Out: Defends Tinubu’s Decision To Include Sons In Qatar Delegation Amid Criticism
Edun attributed Nigeria’s current inflationary pressures to excessive currency printing during Buhari’s tenure, devoid of corresponding productivity.
During the session, Edun underscored the need for a thorough audit of the alleged N22.7 trillion printed without a clear economic purpose, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in economic management.
However, the spokesperson of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Paul Ibe, contested Edun’s statement, alleging that President Tinubu had urged Buhari to pursue such a reckless fiscal strategy back in 2020.
In response, the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, took to his official X handle to debunk the claim made by Atiku’s aide. Onanuga clarified that President Tinubu had never advised or endorsed the idea of printing more money to stimulate the economy. He pointed out that Tinubu had provided a clarification in Thisday on March 30, 2020, refuting the false report that had circulated at the time.
