Real Reason FG Suspended N-power Scheme

On Saturday, the Nigerian government made an announcement regarding the N-Power scheme, stating that it will be indefinitely suspended.

Initiated in 2016 as part of the National Social Investment Programme during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the scheme was designed to empower the youth.

While it has been hailed as one of the administration’s most impactful initiatives, the current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has raised concerns about numerous irregularities within the scheme.

During an interview on TVC News, Ms. Edu explained that the decision to suspend the scheme stems from the identified irregularities. She pointed out instances where some beneficiaries are frequently absent from their assigned duties, and others who were supposed to have left the program in 2022 but are still receiving payments.

“We need to thoroughly examine N-Power and ascertain the issues at hand. Therefore, we are putting the program on hold until a comprehensive investigation into the utilization of funds is completed,” she stated. “We aim to determine the current enrollment, outstanding payments, and the total amount owed.”

The government intends to embark on a complete restructuring and expansion of the program, as outlined by the minister. Furthermore, there will be a thorough inquiry into the allocation and expenditure of funds since the inception of the initiative.

The N-Power scheme was launched by President Buhari with the goal of alleviating poverty, reducing unemployment, and addressing social insecurity in Nigeria. It involves the deployment of unemployed graduates to various educational institutions and other organizations, where they receive a monthly stipend of N30,000 from the government.
