The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that electricity costs may decrease in the coming months as the government continues its efforts to improve power generation and distribution nationwide.

Speaking on Thursday, October 5, during a visit from Mr. Tosin Adeyanju, Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, Adelabu noted that despite concerns over rising electricity tariffs, electricity remains more cost-effective than relying on petrol or diesel generators, given the current high fuel prices.

Adelabu emphasized that, compared to neighboring African countries like Togo, Mali, and Niger Republic, electricity rates in Nigeria are still the most affordable. However, he acknowledged that low income levels make electricity prices seem expensive for many Nigerian consumers.

This year, Nigerians have voiced frustrations over increased electricity tariffs, with Band A customers—who receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily—now paying N209.5 per kilowatt-hour. These hikes have sparked complaints from both citizens and businesses.

Despite these challenges, Adelabu reassured the public that ongoing improvements in power generation and distribution will lead to a reduction in electricity costs. “Nigerians can be assured of lower electricity prices soon,” he said, reaffirming that Nigeria still offers the lowest rates in Africa despite the strain on consumers.
