South Africa Electoral Court Clears Jacob Zuma To Contest Presidential Election
Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been granted clearance to participate in the upcoming presidential election following a ruling by the country’s electoral court overturning the decision made by the Independent Electoral Commission (SAIEC) last month…..READ ALSO South Africa Grapples With Rising Murder Rate As Election Looms
SAIEC had initially barred Zuma from contesting the election due to his criminal record, stemming from a 2021 conviction for defying a court order to appear before a judicial commission investigating corruption allegations during his presidential tenure from 2009 to 2018.
However, the electoral court’s judgment, delivered on Tuesday, stated that an appeal by Zuma and his party was successful, leading to the dismissal of objections against his candidature.
In a brief court order, the electoral court wrote, “The decision of the Electoral Commission is set aside.”
With this clearance, Zuma is anticipated to run for the presidency on behalf of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, which he established last year after departing from the African National Congress (ANC).
The upcoming election, scheduled for May 29, is expected to be highly competitive, with analysts predicting that Zuma’s popularity could significantly impact the vote share of the ruling ANC, which is already facing challenges.
