Following their impressive performance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they clinched the silver medal, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have surged up the FIFA World Rankings by an impressive 14 spots, now occupying the 28th position in the latest February edition….READ ALSO
According to the ranking released on Thursday by FIFA, the Nigerian team garnered a total of 1,522 points, a notable increase from the 1,474 points they held in December 2023.
This upward trajectory solidifies the Super Eagles’ status as the third-best team on the African continent, trailing behind Morocco and Senegal, who hold the 12th and 17th positions respectively with 1,663 and 1,620 points.
Meanwhile, the newly crowned AFCON champions, Cote d’Ivoire, have reaped the rewards of their continental triumph by ascending to the 39th position, a significant climb of 10 spots.
South Africa, the second runners-up of the tournament, also witnessed a notable rise, climbing 8 spots to secure the 58th position. On the other hand, teams like Egypt, Cameroon, and Ghana experienced drops in their rankings following their early exits from AFCON 2023.
Among the biggest movers in the rankings is Angola, who climbed an impressive 24 spots to occupy the 93rd position after their performance in the tournament.
In terms of points, Qatar emerged as the standout performer, securing the largest tally of 92.04 points and climbing 21 places to the 37th position after successfully defending their continental crown at the Asian Cup.
Other notable climbers include Jordan, Thailand, Senegal, and Tajikistan, with the latter making their debut appearance in the top 100 rankings.
The global rankings also highlight impressive performances from Equatorial Guinea, Cabo Verde, Namibia, and Mali, all of whom experienced significant climbs in the latest installment of the FIFA rankings.
