During the 2024 Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES) in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, acknowledged the temporary hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly the less privileged, due to the subsidy removal.
Tinubu emphasized that eliminating the subsidy was imperative to redirect resources towards critical sectors like energy security and social infrastructure. He stressed the need for a transparent and accountable energy sector, facilitated by the subsidy’s removal.
“The decision to remove the petroleum subsidy is not an easy one, but it is a necessary one for the long-term energy security and economic prosperity of our beloved nation,” Tinubu stated.
He further assured that his administration is committed to implementing social intervention programs to alleviate the short-term impact on vulnerable populations, ensuring equitable burden-sharing.
Tinubu urged stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration, emphasizing the transformative potential of these challenging times for Nigeria’s future prosperity.
