Uzodimma Pledges Swift Implementation Of New Minimum Wage In Imo State

Acknowledging the significant contribution of workers to the state’s development, the governor pledged to implement the minimum wage soon after the tripartite committee and the federal government reach an agreement on the issue. He expressed gratitude for the support his administration has received from workers since he assumed office in 2020, promising to continue placing the welfare and interests of the people above all other considerations.

Highlighting various welfare initiatives for Imo workers, Uzodimma mentioned timely salary disbursement, complimentary transportation to and from work, a fully funded health insurance scheme, and measures to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal. He also announced a salary adjustment to N40,000 for lower-level employees and emphasized his government’s commitment to workers’ well-being.

Reflecting on his administration’s achievements, Uzodimma noted the extension of the service period for teachers and the initiation of gratuity payments to retired workers. He also addressed concerns about corruption among some workers, emphasizing the need to restore trust and integrity in government operations.

In response, the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Imo State Chapter, Comrade Uche Chigemezu Nwigwe, expressed appreciation for the governor’s efforts in addressing workers’ concerns. He urged the immediate implementation of approved promotion arrears and called for a consequential salary adjustment in line with the new minimum wage. Additionally, he requested an expansion of the free bus fleet for Imo workers and urged the state to be among the first to implement the new national minimum wage once finalized.
