Young Gun: Khari Ranson – Arsenal’s Rising Star
2024/25 season kicks off, Arsenal’s “Young Gun” series returns, showcasing the academy’s brightest talents. This installment features Khari Ranson, a promising goalkeeper who has been making waves at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. Ranson recently shared insights about his journey, his family, and his career aspirations in an exclusive interview for the Brighton matchday programme.
A Glimpse into Khari Ranson’s Journey
Khari Ranson’s football journey began in East London, where he started playing at a young age, around three or four. Despite his school lacking a football team, Ranson honed his skills in competitive Year 5 versus Year 6 games during lunchtime.
Growing up in a sports-oriented family, Ranson’s upbringing was vibrant with athleticism. His mother, originally from Ghana, and his father, from Nigeria, often engage in friendly debates about which jollof rice is superior—Ranson, a fan of Nigerian jollof, has his own stake in the family rivalry. His younger sister excels in athletics, while his father runs a five-a-side team and his mother plays netball, highlighting a family deeply rooted in sports.
From Midfield to Goalkeeper
Ranson’s initial positions were midfield and centre-back, but he transitioned to goalkeeper when his team needed one. It was this new role that ignited his passion. “I fell in love with the position and enjoyed diving around—essential for a keeper,” he said.
One of his standout moments was saving two penalties on his England debut against Turkey. This performance remains a highlight of his career and a testament to his growing skill and determination.
Inspirations and Early Career
Ranson’s role models include Manuel Neuer, renowned for his innovative goalkeeping style, and Jason Steele from Brighton, known for his exceptional distribution. These influences shaped his approach to the game and his development as a goalkeeper.
Starting with HD All Stars and later training at Focus Football, Ranson quickly caught the eye of scouts. His talent attracted interest from Charlton, Chelsea, and ultimately, Arsenal. As an Arsenal fan, choosing the Gunners was a dream come true.
Achievements and Aspirations
His time at Hale End was marked by significant achievements, including reaching the national final at Under-14s and traveling to Dubai and Brazil for football tours. These experiences were not only highlights of his career but also crucial in motivating him to improve further.
Receiving a scholarship offer was a monumental milestone for Ranson. “The real work begins now,” he acknowledges, expressing excitement about embarking on this full-time football journey. His family’s pride and support continue to drive him forward.
Rituals and Future Goals
On match days, Ranson follows a unique ritual: walking onto the pitch with his left foot, touching the crossbar and posts, and crossing the six-yard box in the direction of the crowd. This routine helps him focus and prepare for the game ahead.
Having played for both the Under-18s and Under-21s, Ranson is enthusiastic about the challenges of the new season. His Under-21s debut against Enfield Town was a memorable experience, further solidifying his readiness for the next steps in his career.
Khari Ranson’s journey from a young football enthusiast in East London to an emerging Arsenal goalkeeper is inspiring. As he embarks on this new chapter, the football community eagerly anticipates the impact he will make. With a strong family support system and a clear focus on his goals, Ranson is poised for a bright future in football.
