Breaking: Akwa Ibom State Government Commits To Accepting Agreed Minimum-Wage For Workers (Details)

Elder Effiong Essien, the Head of Civil Service in Akwa Ibom State, has affirmed the state government’s readiness to adhere to any mutually agreed minimum wage for its workers. During an interaction with journalists in his office at Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, Essien emphasized the importance of realism in the demands made by Organised Labour. He stressed the necessity for wage increments to align with the state’s financial capacity.
Essien explained that salary adjustments in the civil service follow a structured process governed by both federal and state levels. Once negotiations at the national level conclude, the state government will assess its ability to implement the agreed minimum wage.
While acknowledging workers’ aspirations for higher wages, Essien underscored the paramount importance of feasibility. He urged Civil Servants to consider the state’s financial constraints when making demands.
Addressing challenges within the civil service, Essien lamented the interference of ambitious politicians in administrative processes. He highlighted instances where due process was compromised due to external influence, leading to inefficiencies within the system.
Essien advocated for a balanced approach to workforce management, advising governments to stagger employment opportunities to prevent a sudden depletion of staff due to simultaneous retirements. He praised ongoing efforts by the state government, particularly in the health sector, to address unemployment concerns through incremental and strategic hiring practices.
