Breaking: Court Threatens DSS-Boss With Jail For Contempt Over Kanu Visitation-Order
The Abuja Federal High Court has issued a stern warning to the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, threatening imprisonment for alleged contempt of court.
This action comes in response to the DSS’s repeated failure to comply with a court order regarding visitation rights for Nnamdi Kanu while in DSS custody. The court emphasized the necessity for Bichi to adhere to its directives or face severe legal repercussions.
The official notice, shared with DAILY POST by Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, states: “TAKE NOTICE that unless you obey the directions contained in this Order, you will be guilty of Contempt of Court and will be liable to be committed to prison.”
The notice was acknowledged by DSS operatives Tina James and Fatima Abdul.
Previously, on May 20, 2024, the Federal High Court, under Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, denied Kanu’s application to restore his bail as per the Supreme Court ruling. However, Justice Nyako modified the conditions for Kanu’s counsel visitation, allowing him to meet with up to five of his lawyers in a “clean” room at the State Security Services facility, aiming to ensure Kanu’s fair trial preparation.
This latest court warning highlights the ongoing tensions between the judiciary and the DSS over the enforcement of judicial orders, with significant implications for the rule of law and due process in Nigeria.
