Breaking: Police In Nigeria Demand Dog Licenses, Threaten Arrests Under 1943 Law
The Nigeria Police Force has defended its stance on demanding dog licenses from owners, citing a 1943 law that requires pets to be registered. a dog for lacking the necessary license. The video, shared on social media, showed passengers laughing as the officer confronted the dog’s owner.
In his response, Adejobi emphasized that the officers were justified in their actions, urging Nigerians to familiarize themselves with the law. “It’s not laughable that many don’t know this. The police were right,” he stated. He further explained that under the Dog Law of the Federation and Lagos, dogs must be licensed within six months of ownership, with the license badge visibly attached.
While dog ownership has significantly grown in Nigeria, estimates suggest there are over 10 million dogs in the country today. However, the 1943 regulation regarding dog licensing has often gone unenforced. The country’s general animal welfare framework remains inadequate, with ongoing issues such as rabies and the lack of essential veterinary care. Despite some efforts to improve the legal protection of animals, critics argue that the existing laws do not go far enough to prevent cruelty or ensure proper care for pets.
This debate highlights the need for more effective regulation of dog ownership and improved animal welfare laws across the nation.
