Convicted Firearms Dealer ‘Wadume’ Receives Heroic Welcome In Taraba After Jail Term

Reports indicate that Honourable Prince Ayuba Zaku Dampar, representing Ibi-Wukari Federal Constituency, facilitated Wadume’s release. Upon his return to Ibbi, Wadume was greeted by thousands of people, including elderly and youths, who gathered by the river Benue to welcome him.

Residents expressed joy at Wadume’s freedom, with one individual identified as Nuhu describing the atmosphere as festive. Wadume paid a visit to the Chief of Ibbi chiefdom, Alhaji Salihu Danbawuro, at his palace, where he expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his trial and imprisonment.

Chief Danbawuro, in turn, conveyed happiness on behalf of the entire Ibbi chiefdom for Wadume’s return.

Wadume’s arrest in 2019 was surrounded by controversy, as he was freed by soldiers who attacked the arresting officers. The incident resulted in the deaths of three policemen and two civilians, with five other officers sustaining injuries.

During the subsequent investigation, one of the soldiers confessed to using a spoon to open Wadume’s handcuffs. Wadume was later rearrested in Kano and sentenced to seven years in prison for escaping lawful custody and unlawfully dealing in prohibited firearms.

While the prosecution failed to prove charges of kidnapping against him, Wadume was found guilty on counts of escaping custody and dealing in prohibited firearms. Four of his co-defendants were also convicted on various charges related to tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of firearms.

The court’s judgment marks the conclusion of a lengthy legal process surrounding Wadume’s case, which has garnered significant attention due to its implications for law enforcement and justice in Nigeria.
