The scammers convinced Liu that his online lover needed money to launch a business and cover medical expenses for a relative. Liu transferred nearly 200,000 yuan (about $28,000) to what he thought was her bank account. Throughout the scam, Liu never met the woman in person, and the perpetrators also fabricated fake IDs and medical documents to support their story.

This incident highlights the dangers of AI misuse, raising concerns over the regulation of generative AI technology. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have warned users to be cautious of online romantic scams, as AI-driven fraud schemes continue to rise.
