Naija News reported President Tinubu’s condemnation of the attack on Sunday, granting full authority to the Defence Headquarters and the Chief of Defence Staff to bring perpetrators of the killing of military personnel to justice.
However, Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore and Falana have criticized the directive, warning of potential loss of innocent lives in the process.
Falana, in a statement on Sunday, urged the military to halt the reprisal attack without delay.
He stated, “Unfortunately, some villages were attacked last night by angry soldiers. After the attack, the villages were set on fire during the nocturnal military invasion.”
Expressing concern over the destruction witnessed in previous incidents such as Odi and Zaki Biam, Falana stressed the need for preventive measures to avoid further devastation.
“In view of the tragic turn of events, I call on the military authorities to halt the destruction of the properties of innocent people in the warring communities,” Falana asserted.
He further highlighted the legal ramifications, emphasizing that collective punishment constitutes a serious offense under both domestic and international law.
In the midst of escalating tensions, Falana’s appeal serves as a reminder of the imperative to uphold the rights and safety of all individuals, irrespective of the circumstances.
