This initiative aims to regulate food prices, stabilize market volatility, and ensure strategic food reserves to safeguard against shortages of essential grains and food items.
Vice President Kashim Shettima revealed this plan during a high-level strategic meeting on climate change, food systems, and resource mobilization held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to mitigating the impacts of climate change and ensuring food security, Shettima highlighted the urgent need for intervention measures.
As part of immediate, medium, and long-term strategies, the government aims to revitalize food supply through targeted interventions, including the distribution of fertilizers and grains to farmers and households. Additionally, collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Water Resources will enhance farmland irrigation for year-round food production.
The proposed National Commodity Board will play a crucial role in regulating food prices and maintaining strategic reserves to stabilize market fluctuations. Shettima assured stakeholders of the government’s dedication to restoring degraded land, with plans to reclaim millions of hectares for agricultural use under the AFR100 Initiative.
Addressing security challenges affecting farmers, Shettima emphasized the government’s commitment to deploying security forces to protect farmlands and activate land banks. Mechanization initiatives and financial support from the Central Bank of Nigeria will further boost agricultural productivity and job creation.
These efforts align with the government’s pursuit of sustainable development goals, including “Zero hunger” and African Union Agenda 2063. Shettima stressed the importance of empowering smallholder farmers, urging stakeholders to collaborate for positive outcomes.
The meeting, attended by key dignitaries and stakeholders, underscores the urgency of addressing food shortages and enhancing agricultural productivity. Through strategic partnerships and effective governance, Nigeria aims to overcome food security challenges and build a prosperous future for all.
