Last week, certain posts alleged that Fashola was preparing a favorable judgment to present to judges of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT). Fashola, who also served as the former governor of Lagos State, dismissed these accusations as groundless and defamatory, attributing them to “agents of destabilization.”

In a letter addressed to the IGP, drafted by his legal representative Olanrewaju Akinsola, Fashola stated that the claims were propagated by individuals such as Jackson Ude, Yoruba Sheikh, and Reportera.NG on the Twitter platform. He asserted that these posts had violated the standards of responsible public communication, and he viewed the allegations as an attack on his reputation.

The petition stated: “Our client holds that the publications by Jackson Ude, @yorubasheik, and @ReporteraNew are entirely false and they have egregiously breached the basic principles of public enlightenment that uphold freedom of the press as protected by the constitution.”

Fashola emphasized that these posts amounted to character assassination and were calculated to undermine his professional standing as a legal practitioner. Given the significance of judicial independence and the sensitivity surrounding the presidential election petition proceedings, he deemed the allegations false.

He further noted that these allegations, besides causing discomfort and anxiety, also ran counter to the provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act 2015. Consequently, he urged the Inspector-General of Police to undertake a thorough and urgent investigation into the matter, as the allegations not only affect his personal reputation but also jeopardize the independence, impartiality, and integrity of the Nigerian judiciary, as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, Section 17.
