How My Boyfriend Sent Me Packing After Infecting Me With HIV – Pregnant 19-Year-Old Teen

A compassionate stranger in Awka, Anambra State, rescued a pregnant 19-year-old girl who revealed that the man responsible for her pregnancy had infected her with HIV and then abandoned her.

The victim’s boyfriend, identified as Chibuike, ejected her from their home after learning about her pregnancy. Subsequently, she was taken in by a team of healthcare workers who referred her to the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.

Sharing her story, the expectant girl, now six months pregnant, explained that she had been without a place to stay since being expelled from her boyfriend’s house upon discovering her HIV-positive status.

“I had been in a relationship with my boyfriend, Chibuike, for three years before he chased me out of the house after discovering I have HIV, and I have been homeless since then,” she disclosed.

Despite the disappointment from her parents, the young lady expressed gratitude towards the state government for agreeing to look after her.

Earlier, Mrs. Gladys Ezembu, the State Coordinator of the Network of People Living with HIV in Nigeria (NEPWHAN), handed the girl over to the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo. She explained that the victim had been brought to their organization by a kind-hearted individual.

“A good Samaritan saw her stranded and decided to bring her to us. We ran some tests on her and discovered she is a carrier of the virus. We immediately placed her on medication to prevent the unborn child from contracting the virus,” she stated.

Commissioner Obinabo expressed appreciation for the group’s commitment to assisting the girl and assured that she would be provided with accommodation until her delivery. She also pledged to ensure the victim was promptly enrolled for antenatal care while initiating efforts to locate her parents for further inquiry.
