Just In: Abia State NLC Joins Nationwide-Strike Over Minimum-Wage Dispute

The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has pledged its support for the indefinite nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024. This decision comes in response to the government’s reluctance to raise the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

Naija News reported that the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, alongside his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Festus Osifo, expressed disappointment over the Federal Government’s failure to pass a new National Minimum Wage Act and reverse the hike in electricity tariff.

In an interview, the Abia NLC chairman, Ogbonnaya Okoro, confirmed the state’s participation in the strike and announced plans to mobilize workers throughout the weekend. He emphasized the need to follow due process and ensure proper communication with workers before the strike begins on Monday.

Okoro stated, “The order came late and you don’t serve notices on Saturday, so we will do that on Monday.”
