Kogbara Slams Obi: ‘From Inspirational Leader To A Complete Letdown
Donu Kogbara, an international journalist and former supporter of the Obidient Movement, has expressed disappointment in Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, for failing to live up to expectations. Kogbara, who once admired Obi, said that while…Kogbara Slams Obi: ‘From Inspirational Leader To A Complete Letdown
Obi inspired many Nigerians and garnered strong support leading up to the 2023 elections, his credibility has sharply declined after the polls.
Speaking about the recent high-profile defections from the Labour Party, Kogbara described the party as a sinking ship, with politicians scrambling to secure their positions. In an interview with ireporteronline, Kogbara acknowledged Obi as a good man but criticized him for failing to provide the kind of strong opposition leadership that had attracted so many supporters, especially among the youth, during the election period.
Kogbara lamented the situation, saying, “Rats always desert sinking ships, so the Labour Party should bid farewell to those five lawmakers. They have the right to act within the law, though I’m not sure they’re doing so. The Labour Party is clearly in crisis. The chairmanship drama and the betrayal by external elements have only worsened the situation.”
However, she pointed out that the most disheartening aspect for her wasn’t the defections, but Obi’s inability to provide strong leadership. “I just don’t understand how someone who was such a powerful, inspirational figure has fallen so far. Obi has become like a damp firework, offering only mild statements and charity donations. While these acts are good, where is the strong opposition leadership that we desperately need?” she remarked.
Kogbara also criticized the broader opposition movement, including Atiku Abubakar, for not doing enough to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s government. She singled out former FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for contributing to the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but placed the heaviest blame on Obi. “Obi was once a shining star who inspired so many, including myself. But now, I’m no longer Obidient because he’s become a disappointment. He lacks the aggression to challenge this government’s failures,” she said.
While acknowledging some positive actions from Tinubu’s government, such as keeping herdsmen at bay, Kogbara emphasized that the government’s many shortcomings, including poor governance, economic decline, inflation, and widespread hunger, are going unchallenged by Obi. “Peter Obi is too mild. He has so much potential, and if he spoke out more forcefully, he would receive tremendous public support. He is the key figure in the opposition, yet he is failing to rise to the occasion,” she concluded.
Kogbara’s frustration reflects the sentiments of many former supporters of the Obidient Movement, who feel let down by Obi’s current approach.
