Military Operations Force Lakurawa Terrorists To Withdraw Toward Nigeria-Benin Border
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, has reported that members of the Lakurawa terrorist group are retreating due to ongoing military offensives. camps in Kebbi and Sokoto states, significantly disrupting the group’s activities.
According to the report, these attacks, carried out with the support of Operation Fansan Yamma and Operation Farautar Mujiya’s air components, have caused considerable damage to Lakurawa’s resources. The sustained military pressure has forced the group to withdraw towards Borgu, a strategic area near the Nigeria-Benin border.
Borgu, known for its remote terrain and proximity to cross-border livestock and grain markets, has historically served as a safe haven for the group, allowing them to operate and generate income. Intelligence indicates the group may try to exploit less-monitored border regions to regroup and restore their financial operations.
The report also suggests that the group could be moving south towards Ilesha Bariba in Kwara state, near the Benin border, to evade detection. Security forces are being advised to closely monitor key border crossings and market areas in Borgu and Ilesha Bariba to preempt any regrouping or the establishment of new smuggling routes.
Additionally, Nigerian Army troops have reportedly recovered 38 stolen cattle from suspected Lakurawa members in Sokoto. The operation, led by troops from Headquarters 1 Brigade and 1 Battalion, took place in Kalgo village, where the suspected terrorists abandoned the cattle as the troops advanced. The livestock was subsequently returned to the rightful owners in Mera village, Kebbi State.
The report also highlighted a recent raid on Kura village in Soron Yamma ward, Binji Local Government Area, where the terrorists seized a large number of livestock but did not harm or abduct any villagers. Intensified operations are continuing in the region to secure the area and prevent further incursions by the Lakurawa group.
