Nigerian Lawmakers Rally For Peace: Appeal To Tinubu For Nnamdi Kanu’s ReleaseIn a bold move aimed at fostering peace in the South-East region, approximately 50 members of the House of Representatives have united under the banner of Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South-East. Their collective appeal? To urge President Bola Tinubu to utilize constitutional provisions to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

These lawmakers, representing diverse constituencies and political affiliations, have petitioned President Tinubu to invoke Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. They argue that releasing Kanu would significantly contribute to restoring peace in the South-East, a region grappling with various challenges.

Outlined in a comprehensive three-page letter dated June 19, 2024, and signed by the concerned lawmakers, the appeal emphasizes the need for a presidential peace initiative alongside Kanu’s release. The legislators underscored the pivotal role such actions could play in addressing underlying issues fueling unrest in the region.

Among the signatories are Hon. Obi Aguocha (Abia), Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere (Imo), Hon. Aliyu Mustapha (Kaduna), and numerous other representatives from across Nigeria. Their unified stance reflects a commitment to leveraging legislative influence to promote dialogue and reconciliation.

The appeal draws parallels to previous instances where presidential intervention helped defuse tensions, citing successful precedents involving figures like Omoyele Sowore and Sunday Igboho. Lawmakers argue that similar measures are warranted to alleviate socio-political strains and foster a conducive environment for economic recovery.

Expressing optimism in President Tinubu’s commitment to national unity, justice, and fairness, the lawmakers anticipate a positive response. They view Kanu’s release as not just a legal action but a symbolic gesture towards inclusivity and dialogue, vital for sustainable peace and development in Nigeria.

As Nigeria navigates through constitutional reforms and seeks to address regional grievances, the lawmakers’ appeal signifies a pivotal step towards healing fractured relationships and promoting a unified national agenda.
