These lawmakers, representing diverse constituencies and political affiliations, have petitioned President Tinubu to invoke Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. They argue that releasing Kanu would significantly contribute to restoring peace in the South-East, a region grappling with various challenges.

Outlined in a comprehensive three-page letter dated June 19, 2024, and signed by the concerned lawmakers, the appeal emphasizes the need for a presidential peace initiative alongside Kanu’s release.
