Nigerian Students Stand In Solidarity With Labour’s Nationwide Strike For Minimum-Wage Increase (Details)
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has thrown its weight behind organized labour’s decision to embark on a nationwide strike in protest of the federal government’s refusal to meet minimum wage demands.
In a statement issued by NANS President Pedro Obi on Sunday, the association declared its support for the legitimate and reasonable demands of labour. The strike, announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Friday, is set to commence on Monday, June 3, 2024.
Obi emphasized the dire economic realities faced by Nigerian workers, citing inflation, rising living costs, and the devaluation of the naira. He stressed that an improved minimum wage is essential to alleviate the financial strain on millions of Nigerian families, including the parents and guardians of students who are predominantly workers and civil servants.
NANS called on students, civil society organizations, and citizens to rally behind labour in its efforts to secure a fair minimum wage agreement with the government. The association highlighted the importance of a prompt resolution to maintain industrial harmony and ensure uninterrupted functioning of educational institutions.
“We stand ready to support the labour movement and the Nigerian workers in their quest for a fair and just wage,” the statement affirmed. NANS urged all stakeholders to advocate for a resolution that upholds the dignity and well-being of every Nigerian worker.
The solidarity shown by NANS underscores the widespread concern for equitable compensation and underscores the significance of collective action in addressing socio-economic issues affecting the nation.
