This decision, which aligns with resolutions made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), aims to uphold diplomatic measures in response to the political upheaval in Niger. Since the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, 2023, and the subsequent installation of a military junta led by General Abdourrahamane Tchiani, ECOWAS has taken a firm stance against the illegitimate government.
In a directive issued by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), commercial flights from Niger to Nigeria, and vice versa, are once again suspended. Additionally, flights overflying Nigerian airspace to or from Niger are prohibited as part of the ECOWAS-mandated restrictions.
The Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), communicated through a letter dated February 2, 2024, emphasizes the importance of adhering to ECOWAS resolutions to maintain regional stability and uphold democratic principles.
While these restrictions remain in place, certain exceptions are outlined. Overflight aircraft transiting through Niger airspace, emergency flights, and special flights authorized by Nigeria’s Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace are exempted from the ban.
The renewed suspension underscores Nigeria’s commitment to regional solidarity and the promotion of democratic governance within the ECOWAS community. As tensions persist in Niger, diplomatic efforts and collective actions are crucial for fostering peace and stability across West Africa.
