NAFDAC Cracks Down: Seals Sachet Alcohol Production Lines In Beverage Giants
In a bold move aimed at curbing the proliferation of sachet alcoholic beverages and small-sized bottle variants, the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has initiated the sealing of production lines in major beverage companies…..Read More Relatrd Story Here NAFDAC Sounds Alarm: Over 50% Of Imported Pharmaceutical Certificates Fake, Posing Grave Threat To Public Health
Led by Mr. Adeniran Kazeem, a dedicated team from NAFDAC descended upon beverage firms in the Sango-Ota area of Ogun State, taking decisive action to seal production lines in companies such as Shash Industries Limited in Iyesi-Ota, Nigerian Distilleries Limited, and Intercontinental Distilleries Limited, among others.
The enforcement operation was prompted by a prior agreement between distillers, blenders, and regulatory authorities, which stipulated the cessation of production and importation of sachet alcoholic drinks and bottles below 200 ml by December 31, 2023.
According to Kazeem, the grace period of five years was granted to allow manufacturers to dispose of existing stock, after which NAFDAC ceased approving the production or importation of such items. However, the recent discovery of ongoing production activities in violation of this agreement prompted swift action from NAFDAC.
Expressing concern over the societal implications of sachet alcohol consumption, Kazeem emphasized the detrimental effects on public health, particularly among vulnerable populations such as young children and elementary school pupils.
“The proliferation of sachet alcoholic beverages poses a grave risk of alcohol abuse and societal decay. By targeting affordability over responsibility, these companies are fostering a culture of alcohol consumption among demographics ill-equipped to handle its effects,” Kazeem stated.
The enforcement team meticulously inventoried the seized items found within the companies, with plans underway for their safe disposal and destruction.
As NAFDAC continues its vigilance in safeguarding public health and promoting responsible consumption practices, the sealing of sachet alcohol production lines represents a decisive step towards curbing the tide of alcohol-related harm and fostering a healthier society.
