NLC And TUC Strike Paralyzes Government Operations In Taraba, Closes Banks (Details)
Government agencies across Taraba State were grounded on Monday due to the indefinite strike embarked on by organized labour.
The premises of various banks spread across the state were also sealed by labour leaders who were bent on enforcing the strike.
Some of the labour leaders who spoke with our reporter vowed to enforce the strike to a logical conclusion. They vowed not to relent on their efforts pending when their national leaders arrived at an agreement with the Nigerian government.
The state chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Sule Albasu, said both the TUC and the members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Taraba have collectively agreed to enforce the strike in all parts of the state. “We have also directed our members across the sixteen local government councils of the state, including the two Special Development Areas, to make sure that public offices are not opened,” he said.
The NLC chairman, Peter Jediel, who moved around public offices with his TUC counterpart, said the ongoing action has become necessary due to the present economic hardship. He urged President Bola Tinubu and the members of the National Assembly to, as a matter of urgency, address the plights of workers and Nigerians at large.
Bank customers, who expressed sadness at the situation as they could not make transactions, urged the Federal Government to address the demands of the workers.
The organized labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), declared an indefinite strike beginning on June 3, due to the failure to agree on a new minimum wage.
