The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has clarified that it did not influence Nigeria’s decision to eliminate fuel subsidies, asserting that the decision was made independently by the Nigerian government.
This statement comes amid widespread criticism linking the IMF to recent economic policies in Nigeria, which have led to rising inflation and increased hardship for citizens.
During a press conference at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington DC, Mr. Abebe Selassie, the IMF’s Director for the African Region, addressed these issues. He stated, “The decision was a domestic one. We don’t have programs in Nigeria. Our role is limited to regular dialogue, similar to our discussions with other countries like Japan or the UK.”
Selassie acknowledged the IMF’s advisory role in public resource management but emphasized that the subsidy removal was part of Nigeria’s broader economic strategy aimed at achieving long-term sustainable growth. He noted that such decisions are rooted in local and political contexts, which are crucial for improving efficiency in public resource use.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned Nigerians against the dangerous practice of collecting fuel from overturned tankers, describing it as life-threatening. His warning comes in response to a viral video showing residents in Cross River State retrieving petrol from a fallen tanker in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
The footage depicts numerous locals filling buckets and containers with fuel, seemingly disregarding safety concerns. This caution follows a tragic incident on October 16, where over 180 people lost their lives in Jigawa’s Majiya town after a tanker loaded with petrol overturned and exploded while people attempted to scoop fuel.
Atiku stated, “I understand the tough times Nigerians are facing. However, your lives are invaluable and should never be put at risk. It is essential for relevant government agencies to initiate a robust campaign to educate citizens about the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers.”
In light of the recent cabinet reshuffle by President Bola Tinubu, Austin Aigbe, Regional Advocacy Lead and ECOWAS Liaison Officer for the West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network, has stressed the urgent need for a dedicated minister to oversee Nigeria’s struggling petroleum sector.
In an interview with ARISE NEWS, Aigbe discussed the implications of the cabinet changes, particularly for the energy sector. He commended the president’s initiative to review and modify the cabinet structure, stating, “It’s beneficial to scrutinize the system and identify the areas that need improvement.”
Aigbe emphasized that the petroleum sector, a vital part of Nigeria’s economy, currently lacks effective leadership, which is essential for navigating the industry’s complexities and implementing necessary reforms.
