NPA Unveils $1bn Revamp Plan For Tincan And Other Nigerian Ports

In addition to the renovation efforts, NPA has outlined similar reconstruction projects for the Badagry Deep Seaport, Snake Island, Burutu, and Ondo Deep Seaports under its new ports development plan.

This announcement was made known through a recent document titled “Consolidation of Superior Performance at the Nigerian Ports Authority 2023-A Synopsis of the Authority’s Performance Improvement 2022-2023.”

Among the initiatives aimed at enhancing port competitiveness are the implementation of the Port Community System (PCS) and the National Single Window.

The NPA management emphasized its commitment to translating the strategic goal of becoming the maritime logistics hub for sustainable port services in Africa into tangible outcomes.

Despite facing global economic challenges in 2023, the Managing Director, Mohammed Bello Koko, led NPA to surpass its exceptional performance in 2022. The implementation of performance enhancement measures led to remarkable revenue generation and remittances to the Federation Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF), with revenues increasing from N361 billion in 2022 to N501 billion by December 2023.

Moreover, remittances are projected to rise from N93.4 billion in 2022 to N131.2 billion by 2023. The document also highlighted tax contributions to the Government of the Federation, totaling $77.7 million and N17.6 billion, respectively.

NPA’s efforts to deepen Nigeria’s trade balance included promoting non-oil exports to bolster the Naira. The utilization of cargo movement by barge significantly improved port-hinterland connectivity, with TEU numbers growing from 80,244 in 2022 to 118,046 in 2023.

Furthermore, NPA licensed ten Export Processing Terminals to facilitate exports at Nigerian Sea Ports, resulting in a substantial increase in export-laden containers from 156,790 TEUs in 2022 to 226,456 TEUs in 2023.
