The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, released an official statement on Friday, January 2, quoting the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola. The statement explained that the government had no alternative but to seal the church premises to prevent further tensions between residents and the church.

Community members had previously locked the estate gate, preventing the church from holding services.

Architect Mogbonjubola emphasized that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration would not tolerate any form of escalation and would take necessary measures to address such issues.

Following numerous complaints from neighboring residents about excessive noise from the church, Ministry officials visited the area on November 9th, 2023. Sound measurements were taken at various intervals during the church activities, revealing an average noise level of Seventy-four (74) DB (daytime).

This violated the Extant Environmental Regulations of 2023, Section 58, Paragraph (b), which stipulates that the noise limits for residential areas during the daytime should not exceed 65DB. Consequently, it was confirmed that the church was causing noise pollution.

A resolution meeting occurred on November 29th, 2023, in the Ministry’s conference room, where talks took place between the involved parties. However, the Church declined to sign the undertaking letter, citing the need for approval from its Headquarters and promising an update on Monday, December 4th, 2023.

Expressing disapproval of the ongoing crisis, the Ministry proceeded to close the church.
