Presidency Schools Atiku On NNPC’s $3.3 Billion Loan: Project Gazelle’s Strategic Vision Unveiled
In response to the inquiries raised by former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar regarding the $3.3 billion emergency crude repayment loan secured by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Presidency has provided a detailed explanation, shedding light on the strategic vision behind the transaction….CONTINUE READING
Atiku had called on President Bola Tinubu to furnish a detailed account of the loan, emphasizing that the available details were emerging from sources within the NNPCL. The transaction, arranged by the African Export-Import Bank and aimed at bolstering the naira and stabilizing the foreign exchange market, had raised questions from the political arena.
Presidential aide, Otega Ogra, responded to Atiku’s query, stating that the administration had previously educated the public on the matter. He clarified that the loan, also known as Project Gazelle, is a financing agreement secured by NNPC Limited to prepay future royalties and taxes to the federal government.
According to Ogra, Project Gazelle represents a forward-thinking financial strategy aligning operational needs with broader economic goals. By utilizing future crude oil sales for immediate funding, the project aims to enhance liquidity and contribute to Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves.
Ogra highlighted that NNPC Limited’s project demonstrates operational autonomy and financial acumen. It ensures immediate liquidity, minimizes the impact on future earnings, and has the potential to enhance Nigeria’s credit rating.
The repayment structure is strategically planned, tied to future oil sales, and incorporates conservative pricing in oil sales contracts to mitigate risks associated with oil price volatility.
Ogra concluded by underlining the project’s contribution to Nigeria’s economic resilience and its role in ensuring stability in the face of global economic uncertainties. The Presidency’s response aims to provide clarity and highlight the strategic foresight behind the NNPC’s financial initiative.
