The approval of the bill, presented by Sada Soli, to amend the Flag and Coats of Arms Act for a second reading underscores the legislators’ commitment to upholding national symbols and values.
The proposed amendment seeks to revise section 4 of the Act, significantly elevating fines for individual offenders to N100,000, while organizations could face a staggering N1 million penalty for contravening the law.
According to the proposed amendment, “An individual found guilty will be liable to a fine of one hundred thousand naira (N100,000), and in the case of a Corporate Organization, the fine will be one million naira (N1,000,000).”
Furthermore, the amendment addresses the issue of continuing offenses, with fines set at twenty thousand naira (N20,000) per day for individuals and N100,000 (one hundred thousand) per day for corporate entities.
In his remarks, Soli emphasized the rampant defacement of the national flag by both individuals and organizations, pointing out the inadequacy of the existing law in deterring such misconduct.
The motion garnered unanimous support from the lawmakers and was swiftly referred to relevant committees for further scrutiny and action.
If passed into law, this proposed amendment is poised to serve as a stern deterrent against any form of disrespect or misuse of the Nigerian flag, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to upholding its symbols and values.
