Senator Ndume Sparks Controversy with Remarks on President Tinubu’s Isolation
Senator Ali Ndume recently stirred the political waters by suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is oblivious to the challenges faced by Nigerians because he has been ‘caged’ and ‘fenced off’ by those around him. According to Ndume, the president is being shielded by plutocrats who have disconnected him from the realities of poverty, insecurity, and hunger plaguing the nation.
Ndume, known for his candidness, expressed that his criticism was rooted in patriotism and a deep concern for Nigeria’s welfare. He asserted that his comments, though strong, were truthful and aimed at highlighting the disconnect between the president and the citizens. However, he admitted that his approach might have been flawed, noting that he should have brought his concerns directly to the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership before making them public.
“Whatever I said or whatever I did was out of patriotism. Those issues may be said strong, but they are true. However, I should have talked to the party as the last bus stop,” Ndume stated after a meeting with the APC leadership, where he apologized for not consulting the party beforehand.
The lawmaker’s apology has triggered mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some see his apology as a sign of weakness, others believe it reflects the suppression of free speech within the ruling party. On social media, users expressed disappointment, with one commenting that Ndume “sounds like a hungry man whose spoon was seized and will be given back on a condition to sing praise and worship.”
Another critic suggested that the senator might have been coerced into apologizing, hinting at possible pressure from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Despite the backlash, Ndume has refused to retract his remarks about President Tinubu’s isolation, standing firm in his belief that the president is being kept in the dark by those around him. This situation underscores the growing tension within the APC and raises questions about the internal dynamics of Nigeria’s ruling party.
