The abandoned Sokoto Modern Abattoir, initiated by the state government in 2017, stands neglected as butchers persist in utilizing the traditional, manual methods.

Despite the government’s efforts to improve meat processing and preservation with the introduction of modern facilities, the new slaughterhouse remains forsaken.

The automated equipment and machinery designed for quick and efficient processing are overlooked as butchers insist on laborious, manual procedures in the old slaughterhouse. The outdated methods involve using hands and long knives, emitting dark, putrid smoke into the environment, posing health risks to both workers and consumers.

The neglect of the ultra-modern slaughterhouse, constructed in 2017, raises questions about the reasons behind the butchers’ reluctance to embrace modernization.

The automated facility, which could significantly enhance efficiency and hygiene, has become a symbol of waste and neglect, contrasting sharply with the unhygienic conditions of the old slaughterhouse.

The manual processing at the dilapidated facility involves using outdated tools and techniques, further jeopardizing the safety of meat sold in local markets. Butchers disregard potential contamination and health risks, prioritizing financial gains over consumer well-being.

While the dilapidated slaughterhouse remains in use, the abandoned modern abattoir cries out for attention, pleading for patrons and users. Despite occasional expressions of concern by Sokoto Kara Market butchers, the state-of-the-art facility initiated to improve public health and boost the economy remains unused.

Malam Sani Achida, a seasoned meat trader, appealed to the State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, to intervene and revitalize the modern abattoir. He expressed disappointment over the neglect, emphasizing the importance of salvaging the facility for the benefit of public health and economic development.

A closer look into the situation reveals that butchers abandoned the modern facility, opting for the convenience of traditional structures. The Chairman of the Abattoir, Alhaji Abdullahi Mijin Yawa, highlighted the need for government intervention, proposing either rehabilitation and leasing to the butchers’ association or direct government utilization to prevent further decay.

In response, the Sokoto Commissioner for Animal Health, Aliyu Mohammed Tureta, assured that the state government is actively working towards bringing the modern abattoir back into operation. He acknowledged the importance of the facility in ensuring the health and safety of meat consumers and revealed ongoing efforts to assess the requirements for a swift revival.

The commissioner expressed optimism about the positive impact the revitalized slaughterhouse could have on the state’s revenue and employment opportunities for local butchers once operational.
