Miss Chioma, a student from the Science Education Department, was reportedly abducted while en route to a burial ceremony on Friday, April 5, sparking widespread concern and anxiety among her peers, family, and the university community.
Confirming the incident, Ken Chukwurah, the institution’s Chief Security Officer, revealed that the kidnapping occurred outside the school premises, and the Department of State Services (DSS) has been actively engaged in the case since its inception.
“The situation is indeed distressing,” remarked Chukwurah. “We received information that one of our students was on her way to attend a funeral ceremony in a village outside Awka when the incident happened, and since then, she has not been found.”
Subsequent reports unveiled the harrowing demand made by the kidnappers – an initial ransom of N10 million, later negotiated down to N2 million. With the deadline for payment looming, the family of Miss Chioma has found themselves unable to meet the required amount.
In response, her friends and classmates have launched a public fundraising campaign, urgently appealing to the goodwill of Nigerians to contribute towards reaching the required sum.
In a heartfelt plea shared on social media, a friend identified only as Collins C implored, “Francisca Oma Went Missing! She was abducted on Friday, and till now, we’ve not been able to find her. We need your help. Francisca needs your help. Pray for her safety. Pray for her release. Help us raise the ransom. Whatever you can offer, no matter how little.”
The Anambra State Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident and urged anyone with information that could aid in the investigation to come forward.
“Yes, the command is aware of the unconfirmed information out there on the abduction of a UNIZIK student,” stated Tochukwu. “We want to use this medium to invite the victim’s family, friends, or witnesses to come forward with information that can help us embark on investigations, please.”
As the search for Miss Chioma continues, the UNIZIK community remains steadfast in their determination to secure her safe return, rallying together in solidarity and hope for her swift and unharmed release.
