BREAKING: Why Tribunal Sacked NNPP’s Abba Kabir As Kano Governor

The Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has overturned the victory of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, declaring Nasiru Gawuna, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the winner of the March 18 election.

Yusuf, who ran under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), had initially been declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in March.

However, on Wednesday, following the review of petitions, the three-man panel ruled to revoke the certificate of return that INEC had issued to Yusuf. Instead, they directed that a certificate of return be given to Gawuna.

The tribunal deemed 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total as invalid due to missing stamps or signatures, rendering them ineligible.

This decision comes nearly six months after the APC candidate gracefully accepted defeat to Yusuf, following INEC’s issuance of the certificate of return to the NNPP candidate.

In a brief audio statement on March 29, Gawuna expressed his adherence to the outcome of the election, citing his faith as a guiding factor. He also mentioned that while his campaign team had requested a review of the election results by INEC, the commission confirmed Yusuf as the rightful winner after the review.
