Liliana Mohammed, a 62-year-old woman hailing from Bulgaria, has successfully completed her studies at a Quranic school in Kano state.
Residing in Kano for over three decades, Mrs. Mohammed, who married a Hausa businessman named late Ibrahim Sambo in Bulgaria, embraced Islam approximately ten years ago. She embarked on a journey to learn the holy Quran, considering it a guide for her life.
Mrs. Mohammed shared her educational journey, revealing that she initially started her learning process through private lessons at home, guided by a female teacher.

“I started from private lessons, considering my age. A Quranic teacher, Malama Hafsa, was coming to teach me. We started from the scratch, with transliteration until I began to learn with Arabic alphabets.
“She continued to teach me how to recite the Quran using the Arabic alphabets until I could read it myself.
“From there, we continued from verse to verse, chapter to chapter until this day when I graduated,” she narrated.
Mrs Mohammed, who graduated alongside three other students at Mamba’irrahman Islamic School in Kano on Saturday, said she found peace and tranquility since embracing Islam.
“Islam has given me peace. The glorious Quran is also my guide. As I read Quran, it also reads me. I feel peace in my mind,” she said.
Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Mohammed shared that she has embarked on the challenging task of memorizing the Quran.
Reflecting on her life in Kano, Mrs. Mohammed expressed her enjoyment of residing in a state where Muslims dominate and practice Islam within a favorable environment. She highlighted the well-timed prayer and fasting schedules, considering them superior to those in other parts of the world.
In addition, Mrs. Mohammed’s daughter, Hamida Sambo, praised her mother for providing them with a commendable upbringing, instilling values that bring pride to their family and the community. She acknowledged her mother’s guidance and home training, attributing their positive contributions to society to Mrs. Mohammed’s influence.
“As a European living in Kano, she allowed us to mingle with our father’s relatives and practice Islam like our late father. We pray to Allah to reward her with Jannatul Firdausi, Ameen,” she said.
