President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted the President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, at his Lagos residence in what has been described as a private visit.

According to Ireporter Online, the meeting was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that the Beninese leader visited the Nigerian President during his stay in Lagos and that the engagement was not part of an official state programme.

Onanuga also shared video footage of the visit on his X account, showing both leaders in a cordial atmosphere during the private engagement.

The development comes months after Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, travelled to Cotonou in May 2026 to represent President Tinubu at the inauguration ceremony of Wadagni following his electoral victory in the Republic of Benin.

The Nigerian Presidency had earlier confirmed the visit, noting that both countries continue to strengthen longstanding diplomatic relations rooted in shared history, culture, and economic cooperation. Areas of collaboration between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have also included border security, trade, and energy partnerships.

In April, President Tinubu had also congratulated Wadagni on his electoral victory in Benin’s presidential election, describing the process as peaceful and orderly while expressing confidence in continued democratic stability in the West African nation.
