Speaking at a roundtable discussion on National Security for Defence Correspondents, organized by the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser, Musa revealed that while the military contributes 30% to national security, the remaining 70% is reliant on socio-economic factors. He urged journalists to adopt development journalism as a tool to promote security awareness, ensure government accountability, and engage in policy advocacy.

Musa stressed that development journalism is pivotal in educating the public and guiding policy decisions related to national security. He said, “This approach requires collaboration among all stakeholders and a focus on people-centered solutions that will secure Nigeria’s national interests.” The CDS also highlighted that national security should be supported by an educated and cohesive society, with the military playing its part in a collaborative environment.

Further, Musa called for a shift in how defence issues are reported, emphasizing the need for human security, investigative reporting on policies, and the promotion of dialogue. He urged journalists to report on sustainable defence practices and use data-driven stories to foster informed discussions.

The National Coordinator of NCTC, Maj.-Gen. Adamu Laka, recognized the significant role of journalists in shaping public opinion and policy on national security matters. He praised the dedication of defence correspondents, many of whom have reported from conflict zones and navigated complex security issues.
